2,000 sqm hospital

Anji, Zhejiang Province
Competition, 2013

The town of Zhangwu, Anji, is lying in the valley between three mountains: Niutoushan, Jinhuashan and Yangshan. Recently, the town started expanding to the east. Part of this expansion is a development of new public facilities: a new market, police station and community centre. A small hospital with 40 beds is also part of this program.
The hospital program is divided in three zones: the outpatient, inpatient and staff area, and is simply stacked. The inpatient area on the second floor has room for patients on three sides, that provides view to the three mountains – a room with a view..

The northeast side of the second floor has a closed facade, and provides spaces for surgery rooms. The cantilever of the second floor provides a covered outdoor public space for patients to get some fresh air, family to wait and meet, protected from rain and sun. While cars and ambulances can drop patients off on the east side, the west side is car free. Voids perforate the building, to get sunlight and wind deep into the building.

This hospital tries to avoid the traditional corridor typology, and creates truly public spaces for family and friends to meet patients.
