Mixed Mall, ShanghaiClose

Mall
5,000 sqm
Pudong, Shanghai
Concept, 2014

The Shanghai Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is one of the most promising developments of contemporary China: it can have a transformative impact on the economy of the most populous country in the world. Directly next to this Zone, MORE was asked to transform an existing hotel building into a shopping mall. The mall should serve mixed target groups: the office workers of the SEZ during the day time, and local residents during the evenings and in weekends.

There are two types of malls: malls that are containers for brands, and department stores that are brands themselves. Malls try to communicate their content by maximizing advertisement space on their facades, whereas department stores are closed boxes, only partly revealing their content..

This project proposes to mix these two types by creating a stacked typology of closed and transparent boxes, that contain food & beverage programs (transparent) and leisure programs like shopping, spa, sports etc (closed). By alternating them, the building is a dynamic mix of programs and usages, interconnected by a network of escalators in the heart of the building.
