Cheng Shifa Museum — Close
Program / Museum Area / 11.000 m2 Client / Shanghai City Government Design / 2017 – Competition With / SO-IL (New York), SBP (Shanghai) and Ralph Appelbaum Associates (Beijing) Cheng Shifa was a Shanghainese artist who produced a large body of work during the 20th century, combining large brush strokes in ink with detailed infill. This museum design is inspired by his art and the themes he worked on throughout his life. The museum is organized around an elevated courtyard. The four cores – like the strokes in a painting – organize the spaces and staircases and structure. At the heart of the building we find a double high ‘front hall’ which is the starting point of the exploration of life and work of Cheng Shifa. All public programs are organised around this front hall on the first and second floor. The exhibition spaces are positioned under the double curved roofs on the third and fourth floor. The double curves filter the light in a delicate way, creating an ambient atmosphere.
