Merwede Canal Zone — Close
Merwede Canal Zone Inner city urban renewal 400,000 sqm Concept, 2006 The industrial zone along the Merwede Canal connects the medieval urban core of the city of Utrecht with the southern edge of the city: the highway. This fragmented, under used area, is a mix of industrial buildings, a former military terrain and former factories. By proposing a spatial strategy for the whole 4 km long area, we tried to develop a more holistic aproach for this overlooked part of the city. The proposal superimposes a small scale radial grid over the site, that can be filled in over time with a varying density. The program in the north of the site will have a mixed use character, gradually decreasing to the south. For IPMMC Real Estate
