The Netherlands has a remarkable history of social housing. For more than a century, housing associations and architects have worked together to create affordable homes as an integral part of the city. This tradition produced some of the country’s most influential housing projects, from the Spaarndammerbuurt to the Justus van Effenblock and Plan van Gool. For generations of architects, social housing was not simply a building type, but one of the most important cultural and architectural challenges of the city.
That tradition came under pressure over the past decade as housing associations reduced their role in new development and commercial developers increasingly took over the production of affordable homes. With renewed investment in social housing, the challenge is once again on the table—but quantity alone is not enough.
The symposium explored how affordable housing can have a cultural and architectural ambition. How can social housing contribute to the identity and quality of the city? How can diverse communities live well together? And how can new homes combine affordability with long-term quality, energy efficiency and sustainability?
Speakers included Jenny Vermeeren (Woonstad Rotterdam), Jeroen Geurst (Geurst & Schultze), Douwe Boonstra (KAW), Gus Tielens (Korth Tielens), Floris van der Poel (De Zwarte Hond) en Irene Ponec (Ymere)
