Collective Courtyards, Jiaxing Residential, (875 units) Commercial and Office Total 100,000sqm Schematic Design: Spring 2017 Traditionally, housing in China is strongly rooted in the notion of the collective. From the Beijing hutong, to the Fujian Tulou and Shanghai Lilong, collective space to meet and interact is an intrinsic part of residential design. This element has been strongly overlooked in contemporary Xiaoqu developments – where collective spaces is the remaining landscape between high-rises. Can we find new ways for contemporary living in China, that foster collective experience as a threshold between the scale of the city and of the individual unit?
